United Nations Renews Support for Libyan Political Dialogue

Tripoli, 15 November 2013 - The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) continues to pursue its efforts in support of the endeavours by the Libyan national authorities to achieve agreed political solutions to the challenges of the transitional period.

The efforts undertaken by UNSMIL include organizing consultative meetings and workshops for the primary political forces. Following wide consultations with the main political forces, and at the desire of many of them, these events will take place in Libya.

UNSMIL’s efforts are in line with its mandate to support the Libyans in facilitating inclusive political dialogue, strengthening national reconciliation and proceeding with the constitution-drafting process and elections.

The United Nations stresses that it is necessary for the transitional period to be based on the commitment to democracy, good governance, rule of law and the respect for human rights.

UNSMIL remains committed to transparency in its work and to support an inclusive political process. The United Nations reaffirms its strong commitment to respect and maintain the national sovereignty of Libya.
