UNSMIL’s head, Tarek Mitri, visits Tunisia, discusses country’s experience with national consensus

Tripoli, 30 March 2014 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Tarek Mitri, visited Tunisia on 28 and 29 March, upon official invitation.

Mitri met with President Moncef Marzouki and Foreign Minister Mongi Hamidi. He also held meetings with Mr. Rashid Al-Ghannushi, leader of Ennahda Movement, Beji Caid Essebsi, chairman of Call for Tunisia Movement, and Himma Hammami, spokesperson of the Popular Front.

The Special Representative also held talks with civil society actors from the Arab Institute for Human Rights and collaborating organizations.

Talks and consultations during the visit revolved around the Tunisian experience in building national consensus and how Libya can benefit from it. The meetings also touched on some aspects of the international community’s support to Libya, particularly the United Nations’, and UNSMIL’s assistance in facilitating dialogue between all forces and its contribution to the progress of the political and constitutional processes.
