Tripoli, 21 July 2014 - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomes the announcement by the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) of the final results of the Council of Representatives elections.

The Mission commends the Commission's national role and appreciates the professional work it is performing in extremely difficult conditions. UNSMIL, which has offered technical support for the Commission, will continue to work with the Commission and offer the necessary advice.

UNSMIL also looks forward to the convening of the new parliament as soon as possible and calls for ensuring the best possible conditions for a transfer of power from the General National Congress.

In that context, the Mission reminds of the latest United Nations Security Council Press Statement affirming the necessity of continuing the political transition process and calling for an immediate end to the military operations and for intensifying efforts to reach a political solution to this current crisis in order to spare the country additional losses, violence and chaos.

UNSMIL renews its commitment to supporting the legitimate institutions in fulfilling their tasks and shouldering their national responsibilities in building a state based on the rule of law and preserving national unity and achieving stability.
