UN Special Representative Leòn Meets Constitution-Drafting Assembly Chairman in Albaida

Albaida, 09 September 2014 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Bernardino Leòn, met with the chairman of the Constitution-Drafting Assembly (CDA), Mr. Ali Tarhouni, in the city of Albaida on Tuesday 09 September 2014.

Mr. Leon expressed appreciation for the work of the CDA in the drafting of the constitution and emphasized continued UN technical assistance to the body.

"A constitution for Libya that enjoys the widest support among Libyans will not only reflect their aspirations for a democratic future of a state built on the rule of law and human rights but will also contribute to longterm political stability in the country," Mr. Leòn said in a statement.

Mr. Leòn later addressed members of the assembly. He described the assembly as a safe haven where representatives from across Libya are working to address the challenges the country is facing through dialogue and consensus.

"It is very important that the spirit prevailing in this house reaches all Libyans," Mr. Leòn added. "We will do whatever necessary to support your role."

The Special Representative traveled on Monday 08 September to Tobruk, where he met with the President and the two vice presidents of the House of Representatives, and reiterated UN support for the elected parliament as the sole legislative authority in Libya.
