Libyan Political Dialogue Resumes on Friday in Skhirat, Morocco

The UN-Facilitated political dialogue continued for the second day Friday 06 March 2015 in the city of Skhirat in Morocco.

Speaking to journalists ahead of Friday’s sessions, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Bernardino Leon said that concrete proposals on security arrangements and the features of the future national unity government were key items for discussion.

"There is clear political will and determination," Leon said. “I am optimistic about the security arrangements, which is a key element. The new government needs a secure environment to work,” he added.

Later, after a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Salaheddine Mezouar, in Rabat, Leon told journalists that dialogue is the only solution for Libya’s crisis.

“We are not going to stop. This is continuing,” he said of the dialogue process.

Leon said airstrikes carried out in Libya in the last two days threaten the process.

Leon said at a news conference at the Foreign Ministry: “Yesterday in the morning we welcomed a statement from the Libyan National Army announcing that there wouldn’t be airstrikes in the coming days to support the talks in Morocco. We have seen yesterday and today new airstrikes. This represents a very serious threat to what we are trying to achieve here. And I again call on the Libyans, all the actors to avoid such behaviours and to avoid such actions and to support the dialogue. There is no solution in Libya outside of this dialogue. This should be very clear. All the international community is following, and beyond the condemnation of these attacks they should know that the international community is not going to accept and is not going to allow such threats against the political process.”
