UNSMIL Condemns Suicide Bombing Near Misrata, Urges Unity Government to Combat Terrorism

01 June 2015 - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) condemns the suicide bombing that took place near Misrata on 31 May 2015, responsibility for which have since been claimed by the Islamic State.

This attack, in addition to the death and destruction it caused, clearly aims at undermining the ongoing dialogue process, which is at a crucial juncture, and at killing the hopes of Libyans in finding a negotiated compromise that restores peace and stability to their country.

These attempts to derail the process should not be allowed to succeed. UNSMIL urges all Libyan parties engaged in the political process, realizing the growing danger of the Islamic State on their country and their way of life, to work together to reach a political agreement and establish an inclusive government that can effectively combat the scourge of terrorism and prevent terrorist groups from expanding their reach in Libya.

UNSMIL is confident that a united Libya led by a strong unity government will receive the full backing of the international community in confronting terrorism and in tackling the country's post-conflict security, political, economic and social problems.
