CDA Members Discuss Elections and Constitution with UN Election Experts

Tunis, Tunisia, 26 August 2015 - Members of Libya's Constitution-Drafting Assembly (CDA) met with experts from the UN Electoral Support Team on 26 August 2015 in Tunis, Tunisia, to discuss provisions in Libya's draft constitution related to the conduct of future elections in Libya.

UN experts provided comparative information from other constitution-making processes around the world, identified good practices in elections for the consideration of the CDA members, and highlighted some technical constraints based on the experience of Libya’s national elections between 2012 and 2014, which could have implications for elections expected to take place over the remainder of Libya’s transitional period.

Areas of the draft constitution discussed included eligibility to vote and run for elections, mechanisms for electoral dispute resolution, and management of elections at the national and local levels. Key areas were identified for further discussion.
The day-long meeting took place as part of a series of consultations with international experts on key aspects of the work of the CDA on the draft constitution.

The UN Electoral Support Team brings together resources from both the UN Support Mission in Libya (IUNSMIL) and the UN Development Programme in Libya (UNDP). The meeting was supported by the Government of Sweden.
