Civil society activists discuss their role in restoring rule of law and human rights in Libya

08 March 2016 - Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), convened a two-day conference under the theme of “The Role of Civil Society in Restoring Rule of Law and Human Rights in Libya." The conference took place on 3 and 4 March in Tunis, Tunisia.

The conference brought together 27 Libyan human rights activists from across Libya who discussed the Libyan Political Agreement and challenges to its implementation, the drafting of the Libyan constitution, the building of state institutions, and the most significant hurdles faced by human rights defenders and activists in Libya. Participants also addressed processes of local reconciliation and efforts to end impunity.

The recommendations adopted by the conference included enhancing civil society’s role in mediating local conflicts between communities and monitoring the conduct of hostilities. Other recommendations related to assisting internally displaced persons and other people affected by the violence as well as combatting hate speech and impunity.
