Martin Kobler: ‘National Harmony’ Initiative is a Positive Step

Tunis, 27 May 2016 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, says that the ‘National Harmony’ initiative presented by the group of House of Representatives members from southern Libya, is a positive step.

“This initiative represents a sincere effort to end the political deadlock in Libya and bring the suffering of the Libyan people to an end. It is a positive step in that direction. It is now up to those who carry political responsibility to constructively discuss the elements of the initiative,” Martin Kobler stated.

The Special Representative reminds all Libyans that the way forward must be anchored in the roadmap set out by the Libyan Political Agreement. “There is an urgent need for a political solution in Libya. Time is running out. Libya’s leaders must move forward quickly to ensure that an effective and functional Government of National Accord is in place, and that a united Libyan army under the political leadership of the Presidency Council takes the lead in the fight against Daesh,” he stressed.
