UNSMIL Convenes High Level Roundtable on the Implementation of Interim Security Arrangements

On 18 and 19 July, the Presidential Council and UN Special Representative, Martin Kobler, convened a high level roundtable to discuss the implementation of interim security arrangements as envisaged by Libyan law and the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA). Over forty representatives of Libyan security institutions from all parts of the country attended.

During the meeting, participants discussed the current security situation and the challenges in creating coherent and effective Libyan security institutions. Participants proposed options to clarify and strengthen the interim Libyan security architecture as well as create a process to improve the security in Tripoli as per the LPA.

"The meeting was held in a constructive spirit. I am impressed by the level of professionalism and the wealth of ideas presented during the meeting. I am also encouraged by the genuine will that I have noticed around the table to find solutions for the many security issues in Libya, "Martin Kobler said.

There was strong support for the Presidential Council to move forward in their role as Supreme Commander. Participants agreed to convene another high-level meeting in 6 weeks' time to follow up on the recommendations and review progress.
