Martin Kobler Welcomes the Statement of the Libyan Political Dialogue: Libyan People Eager to Have Strong Govt of National Accord

11 March 2016 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, welcomes and strongly supports the statement issued by the Libyan Political Dialogue members in Tunis, Tunisia on 10 March 2016. He applauds the spirit of courage, determination and cohesion displayed by the Dialogue members and expresses his gratitude for the unanimous support of the members of the international community to the Libyan Political Dialogue.

"There can be no political vacuum. It's time to embark immediately on the implementation phase," said Martin Kobler. He calls on the Presidency Council to take all necessary measures to move to Tripoli once the security situation allows and start the peaceful and orderly handover of power to the Government of National Accord (GNA). He joins the Libyan Political Dialogue members in their call to the House of Representatives to uphold its responsibilities and complete the steps relating to the implementations of the Libyan Political Agreement.

Referring to the UN Security Council resolution (2259), the Special Representative calls on the international community to work with the Government of National Accord as the sole legitimate authority and to support the GNA in assuming its responsibilities to exercise sole and effective oversight over Libyan financial institutions. "The Libyan people are eager to have a strong government that can end the division and lead the country as one," Martin Kobler said.
