Libya's Humanitarian Coordinator Expresses Deep Regret over Children Death in Explosion in Benghazi

03 May 2016 - Humanitarian Coordinator and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Ali Al-Za’tari expresses deep regret about the death of three children and the injury of another on Monday in Benghazi. The four children are reported to be from the Biju family and to have been victims of an explosive device in al-Hawari area in the city of Benghazi.

"I offer my condolences to the family of these children," said Ali Al-Za’tari. "I urge everyone to apply maximum caution in areas where fighting has taken place as the dangers of land mines, improvised explosive devices and explosive remnants of war is very real,” he added.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) warns civilians that areas that have witnessed fighting remain dangerous until the relevant authorities clear them. All parents are strongly encouraged to educate their children on what to do when they come across suspicious objects. The Mission also calls on all parties to the conflict to refrain from laying landmines and other explosive devices that are indiscriminate in nature, in accordance with international humanitarian law.
