International Women's Day: Libyan Women Call for Better Participation in Leadership Positions
09 March 2016 – Libyan women leaders and activists gathered in Tunis, Tunisia, today to mark the International Women’s Day. The meeting provided a forum for the Libyan women - members of civil society organizations, independent activists or government employees - to share their experiences, assess the progress they made so far and the challenges they encountered in their path towards leading positions and in advocating for equal partnership in their society.

Tunis, 17 February 2016 – On the anniversary of the 17 February 2011 revolution which toppled the dictatorship, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, extends his congratulations to the Libyan people and praises their unmatched will and sacrifice to achieve peace and life in freedom. Five years ago, Libyan women and men courageously embarked on the path of change and transformation. They sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of freedom and democracy. However, much more work lies ahead to achieve the revolution’s goals of building a state based on democracy, justice, rule of law, and human rights.

Senior Libyan media representatives review progress following the Madrid meetings of 2015
Vienna, Austria – 15 February 2016 – A three day “working” group” review of the implementation of recommendations for improved professional and ethical behaviour in Libyan media opened today at the International Press Institute (IPI) in Vienna. A small team drawn from participants who attended the Madrid meetings in July and October 2015 leads the review, facilitated by UNESCO and IPI. Together, they will assess the impact to date in the sector and recommend further actions to propose to their peers.
