United Nations Condemns Attack against GNC President, Calls on Libyan to resolve Disputes peacefully

Tripoli, 7 March 2013 – Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Tarek Mitri contacted President of the General National Congress (GNC) Mohammed Magariaf following the gunfire attack against his vehicle and the incidents that took place on Tuesday during a meeting of the GNC.

Mitri expressed his strong condemnation of the attack against the President of the Congress, the legitimate body that the Libyan people elected with enthusiasm and pride after being deprived for decades of the right to vote by the previous regime.

The SRSG called on all Libyans to refrain from settling political issues through violence and to resort to peaceful means in expressing their demands. He also urged them to safeguard and contribute to building and strengthening the State institutions.
