Tripoli, 6 February 2013- The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomes the decision of the General National Congress today on the formation of a constituent assembly to draft the new Libyan constitution.

"This decision is an important milestone, paving the way for continued progress toward a constitution that reflects the needs, priorities, and aspirations of the Libyan people" , said the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNSMIL,Tarek Mitri. " We hope that the General National Congress moves swiftly to adopt the legal framework necessary for free, fair, and inclusive elections of the Constituent Assembly", he added.

Mr. Mitri emphasized that UNSMIL stands ready to assist the Libyan authorities throughout the electoral process at their request.
