UNICEF supporting the preparation of State & Alternative Reports to Child Rights Committee in Geneva

TRIPOLI, 24 April 2013 – Under the leadership of the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Libyan Government is currently preparing a 3rd and 4th periodic state report on the situation of children in Libya, and the report will be submitted to the Child Rights Committee (CRC) in Geneva later this year. UNICEF is providing technical support to the Ministry in this process.

Judicial System holds important Role in upholding Children’s Rights and ensuring their Best Interest

TRIPOLI, 21 April 2013 – The Libyan Higher Judicial Institute (HJI) and UNICEF have launched a comprehensive capacity building programme for judges, prosecutors, and others involved in the judicial system in Libya, with the aim of preparing a solid ground for building a juvenile justice system in Libya. The Higher Judicial Institute has also hosted and led, with UNICEF’s technical support, a 3-day consultation on drafting a Juvenile Justice Law.

Tripoli, 15 April 2013 - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) alerts the media and social network users in Libya and abroad of a Facebook Page that introduces itself as “Security Council/Libya Branch/The Office of Fighting Crime” and falsely uses the name of a major organ of the United Nations and the UN logo.

Libyan Scouts Take Centre Stage as International Mine Action Day is Marked by Pomp and Speeches

The young boy scout lifted up a placard that read “Isn’t It My Right to Live Like Other Children?” along with a cartoon drawing of a boy who lost a leg watching other children playing football. The marching band blew the horns and beat the drums.

TRIPOLI, 4 April 2013 – The Ministry of Education, The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and international and local NGOs are today marking the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action to raise awareness of the continuing threats of mines, explosive remnants of war (ERW), fireworks, and weapons, especially among children.
