Press Statement on the violence around the town of Zuwara

Tripoli, 4 April 2012 – The United Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expresses its deep concern over the recent upsurge of violence around the towns of Zuwara, al-Jumail and Regdalin and reports of growing casualties. UNSMIL welcomes the efforts of the Libyan authorities in conjunction with local leaders to move quickly to broker a ceasefire and restore calm and order. UNSMIL also calls on all concerned parties to immediately cease hostilities while negotiations are on-going.

Press Statement on Sabha, 29, March 2012

Tripoli 29 March, 2012 - The United Nation Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomes the securing of the cease-fire brokered locally last night in Sabha. Reports from the Sabha Medical Center indicate that the fighting over the past four days has resulted in approximately 50 killed and 167 wounded.

Top UNSMIL Official Visits Conflict-Struck Cities in Libyan East

The top United Nations official in Libya visited East Libya on a three-day trip ending Monday to assess how the region’s conflict-affected cities – some of them still littered with mines and unexploded missiles – are rehabilitating as they deal with a fresh wave of internally displaced persons and prepare for national elections in June.
