On 17 December, MINURSO celebrated Bhutan National Day by raising its flag at the Mission headquarters in Laayoune.
The Day commemorates the coronation of the first Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) of modern Bhutan. It is Bhutan's most significant national holiday and is widely celebrated throughout the country.
Bhutan has always worked constructively with other member states to achieve the noble objectives of the United Nations since its membership in 1971.
Today, Bhutan provides 203 uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping operations worldwide, including to MINURSO.
The white color of the dragon in Bhutan's flag represents purity, the yellow represents the Kingdom of Bhutan's yellow Kabney (traditional silk sash), the orange represents the Buddhist tradition, and the jewels represent Bhutan's wealth and security.
