UNITAMS congratulates the Sudanese Journalists’ Association

The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) welcomes the growing use of democratic processes in the work of professional, political and civil society organizations in Sudan.

In this context, UNITAMS congratulates the Sudanese Journalists’ Association for successfully completing a peaceful, participatory process to elect a President and a Council. This is a positive model for the exercise of freedom of association in Sudan which includes the right of workers to establish and join organizations of their own choosing. We hope it is also a step forward for the equal participation of women in democratic processes.

“The freedoms of expression, assembly and association are the foundations of a sound democratic life,” said Volker Perthes, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan, “Any steps to further the exercise of these freedoms supports the creation a conducive environment for a credible democratic transition.”
