With reference to the article published on 25 July 2018 in Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, entitled : “Kardel to Asharq Al-Awsat: It is Time for a Defense Strategy to Disarm Hizbullah”, the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon clarifyies the following:
The title included by Asharq Al-Awsat does not match the content of the article or the quotes attributed to the UN Special Coordinator. UNSCOL also notes that the Special Coordinator did not make any specific reference in the article to any parties or groups in Lebanon. She referred to the report of the UN Secretary-General on the implementation of resolution 1701 and to President Michel Aoun’s stated intention to convene a national dialogue to discuss a national defense strategy. She noted as per her briefing to the Security Council, the importance of a national defense strategy that is Lebanese-owned and led, comprehensive and sustainable, which would enable Lebanon to meet its international obligations.
