Leon Holds Consultations with General National Congress Representatives in Algerian Capital

31 July 2015 - Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya and Head of the Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Bernardino Leon met in Algiers on Friday 31 July 2015 with a delegation of the General National Congress led by President Nouri Abu Sahmein.

The meeting comes in the context of UNSMIL’s efforts to move forward in the Libyan-Libyan dialogue process with the aim to resolving Libya’s political and military conflict.

Algerian Minister of Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the Arab League, Abdelkader Messahel and Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni also joined the discussions in the Algerian capital.

In a press conference after the meeting, SRSG Leon said that he hopes that a dialogue round to advance the Libyan political agreement that was initialled earlier in July will convene in the coming week. Different ideas were discussed to resume the process with all Libyan participants. UNSMIL will be in contact with the parties.

SRSG Leon also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the Algerian Minister of Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the Arab League, Abdelkader Messahel, and his team, as well as to the Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni for their political support.
