Tripoli , 24 March 2013 - Following reports circulated in the past week, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) issued the following clarification:

1. On 14 March 2013, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2095 which extended the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya for a year. UNSMIL will continue providing support to Libya in its democratic transition through technical advice and assistance to the electoral process and the drafting of a new constitution; promoting the rule of law and human rights, restoring public security; countering weapons proliferation; and coordinating international assistance. In resolution 2095, the international community looks forward to the future of Libya grounded in national unity, democratic participation and justice.

2. The extension of the mandate was at the request of the Secretary-General of the United Nations who presented a detailed report on the work of the Mission during the past six months.

3. In an address to the Security Council that was welcomed by all its members, Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan affirmed his appreciation for what the United Nations has accomplished and continues to do in Libya in accordance with Libyan national priorities. He also expressed his satisfaction for the extension of the mandate and the continuation of UNSMIL's work in Libya.

4. UNSMIL is firm in respecting the national sovereignty of Libya and stands with the Libyan people in all its political diversity. UNSMIL is transparent in reporting about its activities. It is ready to engage in dialogue with all interested parties and is open to criticism and suggestions.

5. The Mission is committed to remain true to the role of the United Nations in Libya's contemporary history, be it during the independence era in 1951 or during the people's revolution against tyranny in 2011. In fulfilling this role, the United Nations values the confidence it has enjoyed and which is being renewed by a broad section of Libyans.
