Statement from UNSMIL on Libya's Independence Day
Tripoli – On the 73rd anniversary of Libya's independence, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) extends heartfelt congratulations to the Libyan people. On this occasion, we celebrate not only Libya's hard-won freedom and sovereignty but also the resilience and determination of its citizens.
Regrettably, this anniversary has also served, for the past three years, as a reminder of failed elections and thwarted aspirations of Libyans to express their free will, choose their leaders, and renew institutional legitimacy.
It is crucial for Libyan leaders today to draw inspiration from the legacy of the founding founders, come together to uphold national integrity and sovereignty, and work toward a sustainable future for all citizens. They bear the responsibility to safeguard the nation for which their ancestors sacrificed so much.
UNSMIL remains committed to supporting Libyans in their pursuit of peaceful and prosperous future. The mission urges all stakeholders to engage constructively with its plan to revitalize the political process, fostering collaboration and compromise to move beyond the current deadlock and build a Libya that guarantees peace, justice, and equal opportunity for all.
Happy Independence Day.
