UNSMIL in Contact with Libyans in Efforts to Win Release of Kidnapped Jordanian Ambassador

Tripoli, 16 April 2014 - The UN Security Council has issued a statement to the press condemning in the strongest terms the attack on the Jordanian diplomatic convoy on 15 April which resulted in the abduction of the ambassador and the injury of his driver.

The Security Council members also expressed their deep concern at this unjustifiable act and called for the immediate release of the Jordanian ambassador.

The Security Council called on the Libyan authorities to protect diplomatic and consular property and personnel, to respect fully their international obligations in this regard, and to work towards the safe release of the ambassador.

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is in contact with the Libyan authorities as well as others and is urging all influential sides to work for the swift release of the ambassador.

The Mission will spare no effort to assist the Libyan authorities in bringing this matter to a positive conclusion.
Resorting to violence, including kidnappings, is rejected by the Libyans. UNSMIL reiterates its commitment to supporting Libya in its transition and reminds the Libyans that such acts could have negative consequences on the country's reputation and its economic development.
