Leon in Tripoli, Meets Libyan Actors to Explore Ideas on Way Forward to Reach Political Consensus

Tripoli, 11 November 2014 - Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Bernardino Leon traveled to Tripoli on Tuesday 11 November 2014 as part of his efforts to listen to the views of the parties and various stakeholders on the way forward and to discuss the possibility of convening an inclusive dialogue aimed at reaching political agreement on the management of the remainder of the transitional period from all aspects.

Mr Leon met Mr. Nouri Abu Sahmein in the framework of his consultations with different political personalities to overcome the Libyan crisis. Mr. Leon listened to his views and ideas on how to break the stalemate in the efforts to resolve Libya's current political and security crisis. The discussions were fruitful, frank and open, and in-depth views were exchange.

On Sunday 09 November, Mr. Leon traveled to Al-Baida where he met with the Chairman of the Constitution-Drafting Assembly, Ali Tarhouni, to discuss UN technical assistance and later met in Shahat with Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni to hear his views on the latest developments in the country.

In the meeting Tuesday, Mr. Abu Sahmein expressed regret and sympathy over the bombings that took place in Shahat in eastern Libya on Sunday during a visit by Mr. Leon and a delegation from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

No one was hurt among the delegations in the bombings in Shahat. Mr. Leon has condemned the cowardly act and stressed such attack will not prevent UNSMIL from carrying on with its work to push for solutions for Libya's crisis around which there is consensus, and to assist the Libyans overcome the challenges facing their democratic transition and the building of a modern state with strong institutions based on respect for human rights and rule of law.

Mr. Leon will continue to hold other meetings with various Libyan stakeholders and influential actors in the coming days.
