Leon: Presidential Council Chooses Members of Government; Other Candidate Names Remains a Suggestion

10 October 2015 - After receiving a number of enquiries regarding the list of names of candidates for the Libyan Government of National Accord, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Bernardino Leon reiterates what he clearly said in Skhirat, Morocco, on 08 October 2015 that only the six members named to the Presidential Council will be included as Annex No. 1 of the Libyan Political Agreement.

The other names he listed as potential members of the Government and other state institutions are suggestions made by participants in the Libyan Political Dialogue to reinforce the message of inclusion. Only the Presidential Council shall decide on whether or not to accept these suggestions.

SRSG Leon emphasizes the discussions to name candidates for the Presidential Council were transparent, giving the opportunity to the House of Representatives and the General National Congress to propose each a Deputy Prime Minister. During the discussions, participants from the South, from across the political spectrum including the municipalities, presented a joint message that the South wants to be part of the solution, and proposed an additional Deputy Prime Minister, and named their consensus candidate. Their proposal was widely accepted.

SRSG Leon hopes all Libyans understand and support this strong message of unity expressed by the South.
