One year after Storm Daniel: UN commemorates resilience in Derna and calls for continued support

TRIPOLI, 09 September 2024 - One year after Storm Daniel and the devastating floods that struck the city of Derna and surrounding areas in eastern Libya, the United Nations in Libya pays tribute to the resilience and strength of local communities that have worked tirelessly to recover from the disaster.

On this commemoration, the UN extends its heartfelt condolences once again to all those who lost loved ones and remembers the lives lost. The disaster’s impact on affected communities and families remains profound. The designation of September 11 as a national day of mourning for Derna and the affected people underscores the deep sorrow uniting people in Libya and highlights the ongoing need for sustained support for the people impacted.

As UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya Georgette Gagnon stated, “What people in Derna and surrounding areas experienced a year ago is tragic beyond words. All affected families I met continue to mourn the human souls lost and want their lives to return to normal. The continued strong display of unity, solidarity, and support   to affected communities from Libyans across the country provides hope for a brighter future.

The damage in Derna and the surrounding areas was extensive, with floods destroying entire neighborhoods, schools, markets, and public infrastructure, resulting in several thousand deaths, several thousand people missing and displacing many more from their homes. Despite the destruction and political impasse, communities have shown remarkable resilience in overcoming challenges and working toward recovery.

Over the past year, the UN has engaged actively with local communities, authorities, and affected people on the ground, providing continuous humanitarian and early recovery support. The UN’s ongoing and planned efforts focus on recovery and longer-term sustainable development in the affected municipalities.

Given the significant progress in reconstruction in Derna, the UN urges Libyan authorities to continue prioritizing the rebuilding of critical infrastructure and homes, restoration of livelihoods, and enhancement of community resilience in all affected areas. Increased special attention should be given to families that remain displaced and the most vulnerable people affected by the disaster, particularly women, widows, children, orphans, and people with disabilities.

“There remains a critical need for coordinated, effective and efficient reconstruction and long-term development,” said Stephanie Koury, Officer in Charge of UNSMIL. “The UN calls on all Libyan authorities to work together in the best interests of the affected people and to ensure transparency, oversight, and accountability in reconstruction efforts.”

The UN remains committed to providing crucial support in areas such as education, healthcare, livelihoods, and mental health support, focusing on the well-being of affected people and addressing their most urgent needs.
