Statement by the Political Working Group

TRIPOLI - The Political Working Group of the International Follow-up Committee on Libya of the Berlin Process met on Thursday in a plenary session at the Ambassadors level, co-chaired by UNSMIL and Germany, to discuss the political roadmap UNSMIL announced to the Security Council on 21 August, and how the working group could support its implementation.

The meeting, held at the UNSMIL’s headquarters in Tripoli, was attended by the Ambassadors or diplomatic representatives accredited to Libya of the African Union, Algeria, China, Egypt, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, the League of Arab States, Morocco, Netherlands, Russian Federation, Spain, Switzerland, Tunisia, Türkiye, United Kingdom, and United States of America.

The participants welcomed the roadmap and encouraged all relevant actors to engage fully and in good faith, to progress a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process with UNSMIL facilitation, through the implementation of the roadmap in all its stages and timeline. They also underscored the importance of accountability for any obstruction, while stressing the key role of the international community to support this process.

The participants further encouraged concerned Libyan institutions to complete the first two steps of the roadmap within the suggested time frames including reconstituting the High National Elections Commission Board of Directors and amending the legal and constitutional framework for holding legislative and presidential elections.
