UNESCO: Libya's Antiquities Department Participate in Local Governance Meeting on Crisis Management

Zarzis, Tunisia, 28 November 2014 - Senior management staff from the Department of Antiquities of Libya and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) participated into a four-day training workshop on crisis management and emergency preparedness, addressed to officials from Sabha Local Governance (South Libya).

The 25-28 November 2014 event in Zarzis,Tunisia, is co-organized by the Danish Refugees Council (DRC) and the Canadian-Libyan International Consultants (CLIC) and targets local stakeholders and decision makers, to build their capacity to respond crisis and foster civil protection. In line with the International Humanitarian Law provisions on cultural heritage protection, UNESCO and the Department of Antiquities look at establishing a platform among heritage professionals, local authorities and civilians, with a view to introduce local governance and civil society stakeholders to the basic underpinning principles of in-situ protection, and aspects which shall be taken into account in planning emergency intervention into cultural contexts, as well as in copping and coordination mechanisms which shall be set-up well in advance among stakeholders.
