TUNIS - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), in collaboration with UN Women, organized a Training of Trainers (ToT) on Mediation and Inclusive Peacebuilding from 24 to 27 August, focusing on strengthening the practical skills and knowledge needed to support mediation and peacebuilding efforts. Eighteen Libyan women from different regions across Libya participated in the training.

The training strengthened participants’ skills in conflict analysis, dialogue, negotiation, and conflict resolution, while also enhancing their knowledge of ceasefire arrangements and community violence reduction through interactive discussions and simulation exercises.

The programme also focused on developing the participants’ capacities as trainers by equipping them with the tools and methodologies needed to design and deliver training programmes that can be replicated and shared with other women within their communities and institutions.

Speaking at the opening of the training, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator in Libya, Ms. Ulrika Richardson, emphasized the importance of “women playing a central role in preventing tensions, resolving conflicts, rebuilding trust, and strengthening social cohesion across Libya.” She added that “this training builds on the recommendations and requests that emerged from the Structured Dialogue process, the Libyan Women’s Caucus, and numerous previous consultations.”

One of the participants highlighted the importance of supporting women’s efforts in mediation and ceasefire arrangements at both the local and national levels. She noted that such support contributes to strengthening women’s meaningful participation in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution initiatives across Libya.

The training represents an important contribution to ongoing efforts to prevent conflict, foster inclusive peacebuilding, and support women’s meaningful participation in sustaining peace at the local and national levels across Libya.
