PRAGUE – Members of the Libyan Joint Technical Coordination Team on Border Security (JTCT) conducted a series of experience-sharing visits to Prague last week, in collaboration with the Czech Ministry of Interior and the International Centre for Migration Policy.
Facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the visit, involving senior military and police commanders and officers from both the east and west of Libya, underscores the collective commitment to advancing the unification of the military and security institutions. The study visit included a mix of working sessions and site visits, focusing primarily on interagency coordination and information-exchange mechanisms, with a specific emphasis on risk analysis and operational border-security strategies.
“This visit is a continuation of what was agreed around activating the coordination and communication centres in Tripoli and Benghazi to develop the performance level of border guard units and relevant entities by benefiting from the experience of others,” said General Mohammed Lakri, Commander of the Western Border Guard. “We learned more about how to enhance coordination and information exchange based on the latest methods and techniques which will enable us to increase performance and efficiency.”
The three-day visit, conducted on 7-9 September, enhanced the skills and knowledge of the Libyan delegation and laid the groundwork for long-term partnerships and collective action to strengthen security mechanisms.
“It was a successful visit to learn about the experiences of partner States, transfer expertise, and become acquainted with modern devices and equipment for enhancing effectiveness, which meets our expectation that we will see such operation rooms in Libya soon,” said Major General Salem Jilani, Commander of the Eastern Border Guard, adding that the group extended their thanks to the Czech Republic and UNSMIL for their facilitation.
The JTCT was set up in 2024 to develop a joint approach across Libya to address the challenges of border security. This training was part of a wider program of support facilitated by UNSMIL to increase cooperation between eastern and western security institutions towards unification, in contribution to a conducive environment to an effective electoral process.
