UNSMIL convenes joint meeting of the Berlin Process Security Working Group and Structured Dialogue Security Track in Benghazi

BENGHAZI — The Security Working Group of the International Follow-up Committee on Libya of the Berlin Process joined members of the Structured Dialogue Security Track today in Benghazi. In the session, chaired by SRSG Hana Tetteh and the Security Track bureau, Structured Dialogue members presented their findings and recommendations on election security, conflict prevention, and security sector governance. Members emphasized that Libya’s national unity depends on the unification of its security and military apparatus, grounded in the rule of law and respect for human rights. Security Working Group members reaffirmed consistent international support for Libyan-led, UNSMIL-facilitated efforts. The session was attended in person by ambassadors and representatives of China, Egypt, France, Italy, Russia, Spain, Türkiye, the AU, and the EU, with broader engagement online, including representatives from Algeria, Germany, the League of Arab States, the Netherlands, Qatar, Switzerland, Tunisia, the UAE, the UK, and the U.S. Also in attendance was the Secretary General of the Libyan National Army (LNA) with Eastern members of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission. During the remainder of this week, the Structured Dialogue members will continue discussing the development of accountable, unified military and security institutions.
