UNSMIL visit Misrata

MISRATA - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya (SRSG), Hanna Tetteh, concluded her visit to Misrata today. Joined by her Deputy for Political Affairs, Stephanie Koury, she engaged with local municipal council members, members of the House of Representatives and High Council of State, civil society, women and youth representatives, notables, political and security actors. SRSG Tetteh reassured interlocutors that UNSMIL remains firmly focused on advancing the UN-facilitated political roadmap leading to national elections, help Libyan people fulfil their aspirations for democratic legitimacy and strong state institutions, preserve Libya’s unity and wealth and lead the country to sustained peace, stability and development. SRSG Tetteh acknowledged people’s concerns and reaffirmed the Mission’s continued commitment to ensure the political process is inclusive while taking into account the realities on the ground. SRSG Tetteh addressed questions regarding the small convening underscoring that its objective is to overcome the obstacles hindering the first two milestones of the UN-facilitated political roadmap, namely completion of the High National Electoral Commission and amendments to the electoral framework building on the Advisory Committee’s recommendations, and that the changes would need legal adoption. During the meetings, SRSG Tetteh shared an update on the Structure Dialogue and how its recommendations can help to shape a national vision for the country and create the conditions for the holding of peaceful national elections as well as provide a governance framework for after elections.
