Smaller Convening discusses impact of the judiciary division on electoral process

Smaller Convening meeting - Tunis - 04/10/2026

TUNIS — Members of the Smaller Convening held their tenth meeting today in Tunis since launching their consultations last April, and their second meeting since signing their agreement on 30 August.

Chaired by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hanna Tetteh, today’s session focused on the potential repercussions of the division within the judiciary on the electoral process. Participants stressed the urgent need to address this division with full respect for the independence of the judiciary and by keeping it away of political rivalries, in order to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming elections and ensure broad acceptance of their results.

Members reaffirmed their commitment to advance the implementation of the 30 August agreement and to incorporate the outcomes of their subsequent consultations, as a single package, into a comprehensive constitutional framework, as required.

Participants considered any procedural steps of a legal nature to implement the agreement premature and unhelpful to the prevailing atmosphere of consensus.

They also agreed to continue engaging with all Libyan parties to secure the broadest possible support for the agreement and to meet again before the end of the month.
