SRSG Bathily compares notes with stakeholders on the 6+6 Committee draft laws

TRIPOLI – After the 6+6 Committee of the House of Representatives and High Council of State announced the completion of its draft electoral laws on 6 June, SRSG Abdoulaye Bathily initiated a series of meetings with political leaders in Libya, regional and international partners, and other stakeholders to hear their analysis and discuss potential ways forward.

Over the last week, SRSG Bathily had discussions with Speaker of the House of Representatives Agila Saleh, High Council of State President Khaled Mishri, General Commander of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar, and Ambassadors to Libya from France and the United Kingdom.

While acknowledging positive elements in the draft laws, he also listened to concerns raised by various stakeholders about provisions that could hinder elections from a practical and political standpoint.

Additionally, DSRSG Raisedon Zenenga met with representatives from 17 Libyan political parties and associations and previously with notables and social leaders on behalf of SRSG Bathily.

UNSMIL will continue to engage with all stakeholders to emphasize the importance of ensuring electoral laws receive buy-in from Libyan stakeholders and that these laws are implementable in a conducive environment.
