The Mission stresses the importance of full compliance with the ceasefire and urges all parties to refrain from actions or rhetoric that could escalate tensions.

UNSMIL is profoundly alarmed by reports of live ammunition being used against protesters in Tripoli who took to the streets last night. This response raises serious human rights concerns, particularly regarding the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. It highlights an increasingly repressive environment in which peaceful dissent is met with violence.

The Mission calls on all authorities to safeguard Libyans’ rights to express their views and assemble peacefully. No individual should face violence or retaliation for exercising these fundamental freedoms.

The Mission reminds all parties of their binding obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law. Failure to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, physically harming civilians, and jeopardizing the lives and safety of the population may constitute crimes. Those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.

UNSMIL underscores the criticality of maintaining stability in Tripoli. Insecurity not only impedes the provision of vital public services and damages essential civil infrastructure in Tripoli, but also puts the country’s economic recovery at risk, which could trigger broader destabilization.
