TRIPOLI—Thirty officers from the Libyan Army’s Weapons and Ammunition Management Directorate completed two training courses on the safe handling and storage of weapons and ammunition between 26 April and 7 May.
Delivered by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s Mine Action Section and in coordination with Office of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, the courses aimed to reduce the risk of accidental explosions and increase safety and security when handling ammunition by strengthening officer’s practical skills. It combined classroom instruction with practical exercises on ammunition safety and storage, based on international guidelines.
The courses were delivered at the Ministry of Defence compound in Tripoli.
Safe and secure weapons and ammunition management remains critical in Libya, where years of conflict and instability have contributed to the proliferation of unsecured stockpiles and increased risks to civilians and communities. Strengthening national capacities in ammunition management is also an important component of broader efforts to enhance security, strengthen state institutions and support long-term stability in Libya.
At the end of the training, evaluation showed significant improvement in participants' practical skills applicable to improving storehouses management procedures.
Officials from the Ministry of Defence, during a closing ceremony, welcomed the UN’s support, calling for continued training, follow-up assessments and advanced courses on weapons and ammunition management.
