Tripoli, 26 March 2014 - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomes the decision of Libya’s General National Congress to commission the High National Elections Commission to hold supplementary elections for the Constitution-Drafting Assembly.
The Mission hopes that this will be an adequate opportunity to bypass all the obstacles that have prevented holding the elections in several constituencies.
UNSMIL believes that the seventh constitutional amendment, on the necessity of consensus with the components of Libyan society of cultural and linguistic peculiarity, with regards to decisions concerning them, responds to their aspirations.
The Mission emphasizes the importance of openness to diverse contributions expressing the aspirations of all Libyan groups throughout the constitution-making process.
UNSMIL renews its willingness to provide requested and appropriate support during the course of the constitution-drafting process.
