TRIPOLI - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) continues to closely monitor developments related to the judicial crisis and its impact on the unity of the judiciary.
UNSMIL recalls that the current mediation efforts, led by the mediation committee composed of distinguished Libyan judicial, legal, and parliamentary figures, are purely national and independent in nature. The Mission further emphasizes that the Committee’s outputs and proposals are the sole result of the Committee’s work, developed through consultations with relevant legal and judicial stakeholders. The Mission has provided limited technical support when requested and does not attend the Committee’s sessions or its meetings with Libyan stakeholders.
The three proposals put forward by the Committee in February constitute the minimum required to help safeguard the independence, integrity, and unity of the judicial authority. These proposals respond to the requirements of public interest and to advancing the next phase in Libya’s transition toward stability. UNSMIL urges all relevant authorities to engage promptly, constructively, and in good faith with these proposals to prevent further fragmentation of the judicial authority and to restore its unity, and to reinforce the independence and integrity of the judiciary.
