TRIPOLI — The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expresses deep concern over reports of continued mobilization of armed formations along with the alarming continuation of assassination incidents in Zawiya and surrounding areas, which risk triggering a new round of violence and further endangering civilians.
Recent findings by the Panel of Experts on Libya have highlighted how competition among armed actors for influence, territorial control, and access to state resources continues to undermine security, weaken state institutions, fuel impunity, and obstruct Libya’s path toward peace and stability.
UNSMIL reminds all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law, including the protection of civilians, and demands that they refrain from using densely populated areas for military purposes. UNSMIL further calls for prompt, independent, and transparent investigations into unlawful killings, assassinations, intimidation, and violence against civilians, with those responsible held accountable under due process and the rule of law.
As Eid Al-Adha approaches, the Mission urges all parties to seize this important and sacred occasion as an opportunity for reconciliation, restraint, and dialogue, and to prioritize the interests and safety of people of Zawiya over all other considerations.
UNSMIL reiterates its support for all efforts aimed at de-escalation, accountability, and the preservation of stability and avails its good offices for such purpose.
