22 October 2014 – Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Bernardino Leon met on Tuesday 21 October2014 in Malta with Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thini.

Mr. Leon briefed the Libyan Prime Minister in detail about the dialogue initiative facilitated by the United Nations and launched in Ghadames on 29 September between the Libyan parliamentarians.

The Special Representative stressed that there is commitment by both delegations to bring this dialogue to a successful conclusion. Despite his concern about the latest military escalation and the calls for further military action, which were not conducive to the dialogue process, the Special Representative expressed hope that the commitment of the parties, together with strong support from all Libyans, will yield tangible results in the coming weeks.

While Prime Minister Al-Thini explained to Mr. Leon the difficult security and humanitarian situation in some areas, both agreed that all efforts must focus now on a peaceful solution through dialogue, and that all Libyans should work to this end. Prime Minister Al-Thini promised to explore ways to reinforce this in the coming days.

Both Mr. Leon and PM Al-Thini ask Libyans to keep their hope in the dialogue to end the country's crisis.

Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat and the foreign minister, George Vella, attended the meeting in Malta.
