Youth Engagement

Promoting progress on the youth, peace and security agenda through:

In May 2024 UNSMIL launched its youth engagement strategy #YouEngage. This is a transformative approach by UNSMIL to empower young Libyans with the tools they need to advocate for themselves and their visions for Libya.

Aligning with UN Resolution 2250 (2015) on Youth, Peace and Security, #YouEngage is dedicated to integrating Libyan youth into the peacebuilding process, recognizing that their ideas and perspectives are crucial for progress. The strategy has three pillars:

Training

  • Empowering and strengthening the role of young men and women in society and enabling them to engage in the political process through dedicated training on communications, advocacy, human rights monitoring and sharing knowledge and experiences.
  • Empowering young women through the annual Ra’idat programme, training up to 35 young women each year in a dedicated programme on communications, advocacy, leadership, human rights, elections and women’s rights.

Advocacy

  • Through workshops in person and online, held across Libya, engage with 1,000 young men and women to understand their concerns and recommendations for change.
  • Gather youth recommendations and proactively communicate them through the Mission’s channels, and to decision makers nationally and globally.

Networking

  • Through the Ra’idat programme build a network of skilled young women across Libya able to engage in the political process and be leaders in their communities.
  • Facilitate youth-led dialogues and exchanges to share views and experiences and launch joint advocacy campaigns.
  • Build dedicated social media platforms for Libyan youth to engage with the mission and each other.
