UNSMIL expresses concern over increasing tensions and armed mobilization in the capital

TRIPOLI, 22 August 2024 - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expresses grave concerns about reports of mobilization of forces in Tripoli, including the threats to use force to resolve the crisis surrounding the Central Bank of Libya. UNSMIL urgently calls for immediate de-escalation, restraint, and emphasizes that dialogue is the only solution to all issues.

UNSMIL is actively engaging relevant stakeholders to reach peaceful agreement to resolve the crisis over the Central Bank.

The Mission reiterates that the display of military power and armed confrontations in densely populated neighborhood is unacceptable and threatens the lives and security of civilians. These movements are not a viable solution to the current crisis or to the prolonged political deadlock, but rather exacerbate the crisis and further the possibility to reaching a political solution.
