Tripole - UNSMIL congratulates the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) on completing the first phase of voter registration for 60 municipalities across Libya. Despite challenging circumstances, 210,545 Libyan citizens have registered to vote in the upcoming municipal elections.
10 Jul 2024 - TRIPOLI – UNSMIL is deeply concerned by reports of another abduction, this time in Misrata. On 8 July, 29-year-old political activist Al-Moatassim Areebi was abducted by unidentified armed men in civilian clothes along with Mohamed Shtewi. While Mr. Shtewi was released after being beaten, the whereabouts of Mr. Al-Areebi remain unknown.
06 May 2024 - NEW YORK - The members of the Security Council expressed their gratitude to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Abdoulaye Bathily, for his efforts, following the announcement of his resignation. The members called on the Secretary-General to appoint a successor as soon as possible.
