Ghassan Salame, leads a UN-agencies delegation, to flood-stricken Ghat to assess humanitarian needs

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Ghassan Salame, leading a delegation of various UN agencies, visited today the city of Ghat - which was hit by devastating floods, leaving thousands of people homeless - to assess the humanitarian needs.

The UN delegation, which included representatives of WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO, IOM, UNHCR and OCHA, was briefed upon arrival, by a group of dignitaries and representatives of Ghat, about the humanitarian crisis caused by floods and on concerns and urgent needs of the city's residents, especially those affected by the floods.

The SRSG followed up on humanitarian assistance's efforts already carried out by the UN agencies, Funds and Programmes in Libya to assist the people of Ghat.

He stressed the need to harmonize the UN humanitarian assistance efforts - in health, food, water, environmental sanitation and other sectors - with efforts of local authorities to help Ghat's affected people overcome the devastating impact of the current crisis and focus on continued support.
