On International Women’s Day, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, and Head of UNSMIL, Mr. Abdoulaye Bathily: “Libyan women are a force for change”

Tripoli – 8 March 2023 –  Libyan women are a force for change and will play a crucial role in the future of Libya.

As UNSMIL works to help break the current deadlock and enable elections in 2023, I urge women across Libya to participate meaningfully in all initiatives aimed at restoring the legitimacy of the country’s institutions for peace and stability in Libya. Women must mobilise to take an active part in the electoral process!

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a unique moment to celebrate human rights but also a reminder that equal rights for women mean dignity, freedom, and justice for all.

I salute the mobilisation of the women of Libya for their increased inclusion and participation in the political process. Their active role will be decisive in the reconstruction of peace, stability and prosperity in Libya.

On this day, and every day, I salute the strength, courage and resilience of all women and girls in Libya.
