Leon Welcomes the Announcement Of the House Of Representative Committing Itslef to the Dialogue:

United Nations: House of Representatives’ Commitment to Dialogue, Inclusiveness in Resolving Country’s Crisis Opens New Page in Relations among Libyans

Tripoli, 01 October 2014 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Bernardino Leon, welcomes the announcement by the House of Representatives committing itself to the political dialogue and to inclusiveness in resolving the country’s crisis.

“This announcement stressing inclusiveness and the Libyans’ ability to resolve their differences on their own opens a new page in relations among Libyans,” Mr. Leon said.

The Special Representative also praised efforts by the parliamentarians who had boycotted the House of Representatives in making the launch of the Ghadames dialogue on 29 September 2014 a success, and their commitment to the political process.

“Choosing negotiation over confrontation is a very encouraging sign,” Mr. Leon said. “These efforts by all sides reinforce our belief and that of the international community as well as of a great majority of Libyans that dialogue is the only way to resolve differences and that resorting to force will only lead to more death and destruction.”

“The House of Representatives, as the sole legislative authority in the country, has an important role to play in this regard, for it is the platform where the different sides can discuss the national priorities in a spirit of unity and in the highest interest of the country.”

The Special Representative expressed his concern on the ones that are playing a negative role and going against the interests of the Libyan people and the Security Council resolution.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), together with the Libyan parliamentarians, will forge ahead with the dialogue to bring peace and stability to Libya.
