Libyan journalists propose a code of ethics during times of crisis

Amman, Jordan - 29 April 2016 - Building on recommendations from two preparatory meetings 19-25 April that examined conflict-sensitive approaches, Libyan journalists, with UNESCO facilitation, have proposed a code of ethics outlining common standards for Libyan journalists to apply when reporting during times of crisis.

The document, elaborated during three days of discussion between media professionals from different parts of Libya and the region, refers to the outcomes of the 2015 Madrid meetings. Salma Shaab, the Head of the Tripoli Journalist Syndicate, stated, “Today’s agreement commits Libyan journalists to be ethical and professional in their work, and to recall their responsibilities in these challenging times.” She added, “It is a reminder of media’s role to enhance peace, support national reconciliation and put the interests of Libyan citizens first.”

Mahmoud AlbouSifi, President of the Union of the Independent Libyan Journalists in the Diaspora based in Cairo, emphasized “they appreciate the practical efforts that UNESCO is making to support the Libyan media to play a positive role, especially with regard to the current circumstances of the country.”

The Code will be circulated within the sector for further consideration to ensure an inclusive approach. Further, it will feature on the agenda of the next meeting of the Libyan media managers scheduled for Madrid in late May.

This activity was undertaken with the generous support of Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United States Embassy in Libya. It forms a part of UNESCO’s efforts in the media sector to reinforce the capacity of Libyan media outlets to contribute positively to reconciliation in the country.
