Libyan parties respond positively to UN Dialogue Invitation

25 September 2014 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Bernardino Leon, received positive responses from the House of Representatives and from those parliamentarians who have boycotted the House of Representatives to his invitation to participate in a dialogue on ways to end the country’s crisis.

UNSMIL reiterates that there can be no military solution to the conflict between the Libyan parties and that any effort to end it must be Libyan-led. In meetings held in New York this week in the context of the high level segment of the UN General Assembly, the international community has expressed its strong support for this initiative aimed at putting the political transition process back on track.

A meeting on Monday 29 September will be the first opportunity to discuss agenda and future meetings. Once the sides agree on following steps, substantive discussions will start, probably after Eid Al-Adha.
