UN Envoy for Libya, Martin Kobler, Condemns Executions and Civilian Casualties during Clashes in Western Libya

29 March 2015 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, condemns the reported executions and civilian casualties of people from al-Tewibya and al-Zawiya that took place between 22 and 24 March and warns that these actions could amount to crimes under international law. Armed groups in Warshafana reportedly executed six men on 24 March, after abducting them from their homes, while at least seven civilians, including three children, were killed during armed conflict in the area.

Martin Kobler expresses his deep sympathy, sends his sincere condolences to the families of the bereaved and wishes speedy recovery to the injured.

"I remind all parties to the conflict in Libya that torture, the execution of prisoners and direct or indiscriminate attacks against civilians are prohibited under International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law. The perpetrators of such crimes must be brought to justice," Martin Kobler said.
